- Security: ShipWorks’ database is stored locally on your machine rather than on a massive server farm. This is ideal for those who want to manage the security of their information on their own.
- Availability: With a local installation, you always have access to your data. If a cloud-based app experiences a service interruption, you will be unable to use it until it is restored.
- Installation of a desktop application necessitates time, configuration, and (occasionally) troubleshooting. Users who are unfamiliar with computers may require assistance from their IT department.
- Learning Curve: In desktop applications, functionality is prioritized over user experience. This can result in a software environment that is difficult to learn.
- Maintenance: It is the user’s responsibility to install updates and ensure that their data is regularly backed up in the event of a hard drive failure.

Hardware and Software Requirements to ShipWorks
To run this ShipWorks software, your computer must meet the following requirements:
- Windows XP, Vista, 7, or later is required (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are supported).
- RAM must be at least 2 GB.
- Processor speed of 1.8 GHz or higher
- A minimum of 4 GB of disk space
- Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5 must be installed. As part of the setup process, ShipWorks will assist with this.
ShipWorks will run on a Mac if you have a virtual Windows machine. There are several options for this, including Parallels and Bootcamp.
NOTE: Both of these solutions necessitate the installation of a separate copy of Windows.
ShipWorks ease of Use:
ShipWorks, as I mentioned in the introduction, has been on the market since 2002. It outdates its competitors by 10 years in some cases, and the difference is obvious when you download the software for the first time.
It took me an afternoon to install everything. The majority of this was due to the fact that I am a Mac user and thus needed to install a slew of extra software.
Still, there were some hiccups along the way, as well as some perplexing browser-display issues while I was integrating my Shopify store.
Whereas the current generation of cloud-based shipping solutions has a sleek user interface reminiscent of a Google web app, ShipWorks is more reminiscent of early 2000s desktop software (think Microsoft Outlook).
The interface is cluttered with windows, buttons, and menus. The difference is startling for those accustomed to a more guided, streamlined workflow.
While it may appear that I am disparaging this aspect of the software, I want you to consider it in context. Because they are so powerful, many professional tools are complicated.
Consider an airplane cockpit or a mixing desk in a recording studio. What appears dense and perplexing to the novice can be deadly effective to the person who has put in the time to learn the layout. In the grand scheme of things, learning ShipWorks won’t take long.
The top menu bar contains five tabs, one for each of the software’s major functions:
- Home: Contains all of the fundamental shipping tasks.
- Output: This section covers everything related to printing and email (I’ll go over email later).
- Manage: Allows you to access the system preferences, logs, and database.
- View: Allows you to configure Custom Views.
- Help: This section contains help documentation, access to support, links to suppliers, and company information.
ShipWorks includes an email solution that allows you to send shipment notifications, interact with customers directly, and/or send automated updates to key members of your team.
It is simple to connect the software to one of your existing email accounts (the process is the same as with any major email client).
The application also allows you to create custom views. If you’ve read any of my other reviews, you’ll know how much I appreciate this feature.
Custom views allow you to customize the UI by selecting which windows to display, the level of detail in the center grid, and the option to save and load presets. ShipWorks excels in this area of the user experience.

My interactions with ShipWorks support have been positive. Support tickets are answered within 24 hours or less, and I’ve never had trouble getting someone on the phone.
The knowledge base is extensive, covering everything from printer setup to troubleshooting to online marketplaces and shipping providers. The articles are well-written and include numerous screenshots.
Finally, I’d like to discuss filters and automated tasks. These are the two features that will most likely be used, especially if you deal with a high volume of orders.
Filters allow you to organize orders based on specific criteria, whereas automated tasks allow you to perform actions when an event occurs (e.g. print an invoice once when a shipment is processed). The user who can master these tools will be able to fully utilize ShipWorks.
ShipWorks has received positive feedback in general. Although it is not the most user-friendly software, the functionality, price, and customer service make this a worthwhile product for its clients.

If you look around the internet, you can find some negative feedback about ShipWorks. Capterra has 30 reviews, giving ShipWorks a 4.4/5 average. After rating the software 3/5 on Capterra, a user wrote the following:
“An inventory system that communicates with all sales channels is highly recommended.” Otherwise, the competition will overtake you. Cons: There are no shipping companies and no inventory management. It is difficult to compare rates from different shippers.”
Other negative reviews of the software can be found; they mostly focus on difficulties with software upgrades, setup, and customer service.

By far the friendliest people you will ever meet are in tech support. That, in my opinion, distinguishes Shipworks—they can help with anything. I only wish they offered 24 hour support, but you can’t have it all. “We Admire Shipworks!”
